How does kaolin work?
Kaolin is a naturally occurring mineral consisting mainly of the clay mineral kaolinite. We utilise the physical properties of kaolin:
- Barrier against pests: Kaolin covers the leaves and fruit with a fine layer that is unpleasant for harmful insects. It interferes with their ability to recognise and feed on the plant and can also prevent them from landing on the plant and laying eggs.
- Reflection of sunlight: The white colour of the kaolin reflects sunlight. This protects the vines from intense sunlight and the associated heat damage, such as sunburn on the fruit.
- Reducing water stress: The layer of kaolin helps to reduce evaporation from the leaves, which can be particularly beneficial in dry conditions to reduce water stress.
No loss of wine quality
In contrast to lime, which was often used in the past, kaolin has the decisive advantage that it does not affect the quality of the wine in the cellar. The pH value of the fruit is not changed, so there is no effect on the quality of the juice and fruit. Kaolin is easy to wash off the grapes and leaves no residue that could affect the fermentation process or the flavour of the wine.
The proper use of Surround® WP Crop Protectant
Surround® WP should be used strategically in vineyards and orchards to achieve optimum results:
When to use:
- The use of Surround® WP is particularly effective during the peak sunlight season and when there is high infestation pressure from pests such as Drosophila suzukii.
- In viticulture, Surround® WP is used from the berry softening phase (BBCH 85) until the berries are fully ripe (BBCH 89).
- For other crops, such as elderberry, application should be carried out from the stage of advanced fruit ripeness until the berries are ready to be shaken.
How to use:
- Surround® WP is mixed as a suspension in water and sprayed onto the plants to ensure an even coating.
- 1st application: 30 kg / ha with a water quantity of 1000 litres / ha
- 2nd - 3rd application: 20 kg / ha with a water quantity of 1000 litres / ha
Where to use:
- Surround® WP Crop Protectant can be used in various crops such as vines, elderberries and pears against various pests such as Drosophila suzukii in vines & elderberries or against the common pear leaf sucker in pear crops.
- It is important that the plants are completely sprayed to create an effective barrier against the pests.
- A major advantage is that the product is authorised for organic farming. This means that it can be used even if insecticides are not normally used (in Austria).
